Conference Co-Chair
Steve lost his teenage son Nicholas to suicide in 2008, and thanks to a family friend found Compassionate Friends shortly thereafter. He has been a regular member ever since, and co-leader of the Fairfax, VA chapter for the past five years. A West Point graduate and retired Army officer, Steve volunteers as a mentor of Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed and Fort Belvoir medical centers and is active in a church ministry working with those suffering life crises. He and his wife Cecilia enjoy spending time with their five remaining children and six grandchildren.
Conference Co-Chair
In 2009, Janet Sutton and her husband Rich suffered the deaths of their only children, Jacob and Adam. Soon afterwards, Janet found healing at TCF and eventually wanted to pay it forward in her local chapter by contributing newsletter articles, later becoming her chapter’s Newsletter Editor, Resource Librarian, Correspondence Secretary, Steering Committee Member, Special Events Coordinator, and Bereavement Facilitator. By 2012, Janet became the Regional Coordinator for Maryland and Delaware and helped to conduct a Regional Chapter Leadership Training Program. In 2015, Janet became Chapter Leader for her local chapter. Janet has attended multiple TCF conferences, where she was a sharing session facilitator, workshop panel member, and registration table volunteer. In 2026, she was a Co-Chairperson for the TCF Baltimore Conference.
Rob GoorConference Co-Chair
Robert Goor is a bereaved parent who, in 1988, witnessed the death of his son, Andrew, when he was struck by a car. Andrew was 8 years and 8 months old at the time. A TCF member since 2008, Rob has given a workshop at a TCF national conference and has been a facilitator for the Potomac Maryland TCF chapter since 2010. He has been the Chapter Leader for almost a year. Rob has published a book entitled “Dear Andrew”, which consists of the letters Rob wrote to Andrew, starting from a few weeks after his death and continuing until 2010. Rob has been interviewed on television, radio and podcasts and has written blog posts on bereavement for Psychology Today. Before his retirement from the National Institutes of Health, Rob was a mathematician and a scientist.
