2009 Annual Worldwide Candle Lighting Services - Missouri

Communities across the globe will be joining in The Compassionate Friends 13th Worldwide Candle Lighting on December 13, 2009.

You are invited to provide us information about your Worldwide Candle Lighting event for posting so people in your area will know of your service and be able to attend. Please complete the Worldwide Candle Lighting Information Form.  Note: we reserve the right to edit all submissions.

IMPORTANT: If you attempt to submit your candle lighting service and we do not contact you or your service is not listed within 24 hours, please contact Joan@compassionatefriends.org.

Cedar Hill – Chapel Hill Mortuary & Memorial Gardens

Highlights: Speaker: Dianne Lowerre, Director of Grief Services, photo memorial slide show, reading of children's names, singing of "Precious Child", and informal time of sharing (readings and thoughts from family and friends).
Bring: Pictures or remembrances.
Additional: Photo submissions for the slide show are due by December 10th. They can be emailed to smay@chapelhillmortuary.com or mailed to (or dropped off at) Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6300 Hwy 30, Cedar Hill, MO 63016. 6:30 PM arrival time so that candles are lit by 7:00 PM.

Independence – Eastern Jackson County and Kansas City Chapters of The Compassionate Friends

Date & Time: December 13, 2009 5:30 PM
Location: Walnut Gardens Community of Christ, 19201 R.D. Mize Rd, Independence, MO (From Hwy 291, turn east onto Hidden Valley Rd, which is the second stop light north of I-70. At the stop sign, it will merge into R.D. Mize Rd. Continue straight for about 6 blocks. The church is on the south side of the street)
Highlights: Dennis Apple, author of Life After the Death of My Son, will be a guest speaker. We will also have music and readings.
Bring: If you would like a picture button, bring a copy of your picture (it will be cut to a 3" circle). Also, bring a picture or remembrance of your child, sibling, or grandchild for the memory table. You may also bring a gift in memory of your child to be shared with those less fortunate if you desire.
Special Events (before): There will be a pot-luck dinner starting at 5:30 PM, followed by the program at 7:00 PM. Table service and drinks will be provided. Please bring a covered dish to share.

Jefferson City – Mid-Missouri Chapter of The Compassionate Friends

Date & Time: December 13, 2009 6:00-7:30 PM
Location: West Point Executive Center, 2701 West Main St, Jefferson City, MO (next to Houser-Millard Funeral Home)
Highlights: Memory board, poem reading, and reading of children's names. The program will be followed by dessert and fellowship.
Bring: A picture of your child to display on our memory board. Please, no more than 2 pictures.
Special Events (before): Individual candle lighting of each person present to song, "Who You'd Be Today".
Special Events (after): Cookies and coffee to follow candle lighting and then a time of sharing.

Joplin – Four States Chapter of The Compassionate Friends

Date & Time: December 13, 2009 7:00 PM
Location: Community of Christ Church, 1212 Goetz Blvd, Joplin, MO (call or email if you need directions)
Highlights: We will have 2-3 speakers. A bereaved parent, sibling, and grandparent, who will each speak briefly, and a Power Point presentation of our angels with their pictures and names. The candles will be lit as each angel's name is read. There will be special readings, poetry, and music.
Bring: A picture or remembrance of their child. A Christmas ornament (optional) with the child's name on each if possible.
Special Events (before): Registration will begin at 6:45 PM. There will be soothing music as guests arrive.
Special Events (after): There will be an ornament exchange for those who bring a Christmas ornament. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Informal sharing time with lots of hugs.
Additional: To have your child/children picture shown during the presentation, it must be received by Nov. 30th. You can email to walkalong@swbell.net. Names will still be read without a picture. Our group provides the candles and programs; there is no cost to attend. There is plenty of seating and parking provided. There will be tables set up for your picture or remembrance, and ornaments. This candle lighting program is open to family and friends as well as members of the community wanting to show support.

Joplin – SIDS Resources, Inc.

Location: Bethany Presbyterian Church, 20th Ave & Virginia, Joplin, MO
Highlights: This candle lighting is for parents, families, and friends who have experienced the death of an infant (under one year of age). We will have a simple candle lighting with each child's name read, the opportunity for each parent who wishes to do so, to share a short reading or tell briefly about their child. We encourage those planning on attending to call one of the numbers below or email us to let us know how many to expect.
Bring: Picture or other remembrance that they would like to share. Parents are also open to bring a poem or other reading that they would like to share.
Special Events (after): Refreshments and a time for informal visiting among those attending.
Additional: We encourage those attending to not bring young children with them, if at all possible.

Monett – First United Methodist Church

Highlights: Our program will consist of a short message, two songs, and a time for sharing remembrances followed by a reception.
Bring: Attendees are encouraged to bring pictures or a memento and share remembrances.

Poplar Bluff – Bereaved families in Poplar Bluff, MO in conjunction with the Worldwide Candle Lighting

Date & Time: December 13, 2009 Service at 6:00 PM & Candle Lighting at 7:00 PM
Location: Oak Grove New Beginnings Church, Poplar Bluff, MO (Go 67 north and get on outer service road to the right. The church is on the corner of County Rd 523 and the 67 north service outer road.)
Highlights: Lisa Trainor speaking and singing. Readings by Patricia Stamps, Sandy Doss, Karen Stamps, and Carolyn Chapell.
Bring: All welcome to come and bring pictures or any memorable item you wish of your child that has passed. All parents or family members may speak if they wish to share something.
Special Events (before): Refreshments will be served.
Special Events (after): Refreshments served and fellowship with each other if you wish to participate.
Additional: All family members welcome and can share stories, poems, pictures or whatever they may wish to honor and remember the child whom has passed away.
